About the writing test

How long is the CELPIP writing test?

53 minutes: 27 minutes for Task 1 (Writing an Email) and 26 minutes for Task 2 (Responding to Survey Questions). Both are typed on the computer.

How many words should I write?

The recommended length for each task is 150–200 words. The screen shows a live word count. Slightly over is not penalised; well under gives the raters less to reward and lowers Task Fulfillment.

Is there a spell checker on the test?

A basic spell check is available on the test screen, but it does not fix grammar, word choice or punctuation, which is where most Readability deductions come from. Do not rely on it for tone or articles.

Can I write in bullet points?

Not for a good score. Both tasks are rated on paragraphing and connectors (Readability) and on development (Content/Coherence). Write connected paragraphs; you may use the bullet points of the prompt as your paragraph plan.

Does spelling have to be Canadian?

Canadian spelling (neighbour, centre, organize or organise) is natural, but consistent American spelling is not penalised. Mixing conventions inside one text looks careless.

What is CELPIP level M?

Minimal proficiency: the response gives the raters too little to place it at level 3 or above, for example an empty, off-topic or extremely short answer.

When do I get my writing score?

Scores are normally available online within 4 to 5 calendar days (Express Rating is faster). Check celpip.ca for the current timelines; this site has no access to your results.

About the free scorer

Is the scorer official?

No. This site is independent and has no connection to the test owner. The scorer is a study tool that estimates the level two raters would most likely give, using the four official categories.

Why did I get a 9 when I think my writing is a 10?

By design, the scorer only gives 10 and above when the model itself rates the text that high and the code finds at least four verified passages showing level-9 features from at least two categories, with rare errors. In our calibration, level-10 and level-11 answers were estimated at 8–9: the top of the scale is deliberately conservative, and on the real test the raters may see more than the scorer does.

Why was my level capped?

Three rules can cap the level, and the report says which one applied: the density of verified errors (frequent errors keep a text at 8, 6 or 4), a missing part of the task (one missing item caps at 7, two or more at 5), and length (under 130 words caps at 8, under 100 at 6).

Can the scorer be wrong?

Yes. It reads one task, not a whole test, and language models sometimes miss an error or flag a correct phrase. Every error it reports is verified to exist in your text, but a correction can still be debatable. Treat the report as a second opinion and use the model answer to compare.

How many reports can I get?

Two full reports per day per device, and a daily limit for the whole site to control costs. The limits reset at midnight UTC (7 p.m. Eastern, 4 p.m. Pacific).

Is there a paid version?

Not at the moment. The site is free while we collect calibration data. Nothing on the site is for sale.

Do you store my text?

Your text and its report are stored for up to 12 months so that the report link keeps working, then deleted automatically. No account, email or name is required. See the privacy page.

Can I share a report?

Yes. Every report has a "Copy link" button; the link works for anyone who has it, so share it only with people you trust. Report links are not indexed by search engines.

Levels and immigration

What CELPIP writing level is CLB 7?

CELPIP level 7. CELPIP levels equal CLB levels, so level 7 in writing is CLB 7, the common minimum for the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

What CELPIP writing level is CLB 9?

CELPIP level 9. CLB 9 in all four abilities unlocks the higher skill-transferability points in Express Entry.

Is CELPIP writing easier than IELTS writing?

They are different rather than easier: CELPIP asks for an everyday email and a survey response of 150–200 words each, typed, while IELTS asks for a report or letter and a 250-word essay, handwritten or typed. Many test takers find the CELPIP tasks more familiar; the rating standards are equally strict.
